*** Brief description of YDC programmes.

1.4.1. Water, hygiene and sanitation programme for schools and communities.

This programme is aimed providing potable drinking water and hygiene and sanitation education to schools and communities in order to mitigate the incidences of water borne diseases such as cholera which claims the lives of children and adults alike each year in our communities. The programme will involve the construction of 10 school toilets within 2 years, education and training events, construction of 10 tap stands in 10 primary schools and the formation of water and sanitation committees in the respective communities.

 

1.4.2. Education, life & vocational skills training programme.

To enable young people especially primary school children start developing love and interest in agriculture and environmental protection activities, YDC introduced organic vegetable gardening and tree nursery and planting programme to primary schools since 2005. The life skills programme is aimed at organizing practical training sessions for children on how to establish vegetable gardens as well as tree nurseries and planting. YDC has also within the framework of this programme established a computer training school for children, youths and women to enable them acquire knowledge and skills on information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) YDC plans to set up more workshops on tailoring/fashion design, hairdressing/beauty saloon etc. which will provide practical skills to the less privileged persons in the community. We also provide business skills to the youth and women to enable generate income to fight against poverty. .

1.4.3. Food security & livelihood

This programme will include the carrying out of sustainable agricultural activities with women and youth groups, training on livestock, transformation of agric products, storage and marketing. Main food crops to be promoted will include: maize, cassava, cocoyams & plantains production. Cash crops such as cocoa & oil palm cultivation will also be promoted to enable young farmers diversify their income source and eradicate poverty.

1.4.4. Conservation and natural resources management

YDC is working with communities and schools in the promotion of conservation education especially with communities living around the Protected Areas in the South West Region. Some these include: The Bakossi National Park, the Mount Cameroon National Park. Apart from Conservation Education, YDC has been trained on Community Based Wildlife Monitoring. We are implementing the above activity in the North West and South West clusters of the Bakossi National park. We also implement tree nursery and planting programmes. Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), Nitrogen fixing and fruit trees are being promoted by YDC.

1.4.5. Health( COVID -19 ,HIV/AIDS education, support to health facilities programme).

YDC staff have been trained on the campaign against the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. The organization has equally sensitized Bonadikombo community including Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) on the respect of the measures prescribed by the Cameroon government and World Health Organization(WHO)

YDC was involved in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS since 2002 when the National AIDS Control Committee in Yaounde – Cameroon selected our NGO to assist communities through sensitization and training on the participatory approach to the fight against the disease. YDC participated in a one week training of trainers workshop organized by the National AIDS Control Committee in Kumba, South West Region. YDC was able to train 5 peer educators on the subject and the organisation’s staff assisted 32 communities in the South West Region in setting up local AIDS control organizations in the respective communities. From 2003 to 2008., We also mainstreamed HIV/AIDS education into the life skills programmes which YDC was carrying out with school going and out-of-school youth.

We have carried out survey of patients using health facilities in 3 quarters to help improve health care delivery within the framework of a World bank sponsored Performance Based Financing (PBF) in Limbe 1 Health district in 2017

 

1.3.6. Humanitarian assistance programme

Because of the armed conflict in the 2 Anglophone regions in Cameroon which  triggered the displacement of thousands of persons, we decided to include the above programme in YDC’s areas of intervention.YDC will implement activities in the sectors of WASH, Shelter /NFI, education food security and livelihoods and health in order to assist those in need of food and non food items and other services. YDC humanitarian response plan has been drawn up and shared with some humanitarian actors. Copies of the document are still available.
